Europe’s Best Universities for 2024 Revealed

London, 20th September 2023: QS Quacquarelli Symonds, global higher education analyst, has released the inaugural edition of the QS World University Rankings: Europe 2024.

Evaluating Europe’s institutions based on global recognition, research prowess, teaching resources, internationalisation and employment outcomes, it is the only significant regional ranking of European universities. The final table lists 690 institutions across 42 countries, including 106 universities that have never previously been ranked by QS.

The results see The University of Oxford take the top spot while ETH Zurich places second and the University of Cambridge comes third. The UK is the most represented country in the ranking, with 107 featured universities, followed by Turkey with 73 and Germany with 53.

QS Senior Vice President Ben Sowter said: “The inaugural edition of the QS Europe Ranking is a landmark step and a long time in the making. It offers a unique opportunity for universities in one of the world’s most competitive higher education landscapes to benchmark themselves against their international peers and for its policymakers to assess individual institutional performance across the broadest range of datasets in any of our rankings.”

He continued: “The UK, somewhat predictably shines across indicators, underpinned in part by the global renown of the historic Oxbridge universities and its high-impact, globally collaborative research. However, signposts for success are illuminated in all locations by the respective challenges identified by the datasets, whether incentivising international faculty and students, developing cross-border research partnerships or expanding teaching capacity.”

Europe: Overview

• Charles University in the Czech Republic and University of Warsaw are the only Eastern European countries to boast universities in the top 100 with Charles University placing 86th and the University of Warsaw coming 92nd.
• France employs an intensely international research agenda underpinned by high levels of cross-border collaboration. Four of its universities are among Europe’s top 10 for International Research Network, including two in the top five, putting it tied with the UK in both tiers.
• Germany’s premier institutions produce an exceptional amount of research. The country is home to more universities in the regional top 50 and top 10 for Papers per Faculty than any other country. In fact, two of Europe’s three most productive research institutions are German, with Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg and Technische Universität Ilmenau placing second and third in this metric. Only the Georgian Technical University produces more research.
• Italy is also highly productive, enjoying Europe’s third-highest average score per institution for Papers per Faculty, behind Switzerland and Portugal. Interestingly, Italy has more top 100 institutions in this indicator than any other country, with 25, more than double the next highest, France and Germany, with 13 each. Meanwhile, Italy also shines for Outbound Student Mobility, with more top 50 universities in this indicator than any other country.
• The Netherlands commands the region’s greatest overall renown among international employers and academics alike. In both QS’ Employer and Academic Reputation indicators, it enjoys the highest average score per institution, among countries with 10 or more ranked universities. This is reflected by its high proportion of top 100 universities in these metrics, with 47% of its institutions placing in the top 100 for Academic Reputation and 41% for Academic Reputation, more than any other country.
• Switzerland performs exceptionally in research, both in terms of impact and volume. It boasts the highest average score in both Citations per Paper and Papers per Faculty. Similarly, Switzerland shines for internationalisation, boasting one of Europe’s most diverse student and faculty cohorts. This is particularly pronounced for International Faculty Ratio in which six of the region’s top 10 universities are Swiss, including three in the top 5.
• However, it is Spain that boasts some of the most mobile student cohorts. It is home to three of Europe’s top five universities for Outbound Student Exchange and two for Inbound Student Exchange, more than any other country. Meanwhile, IE University is home to the most international student body in the region.
• Despite its large number of ranked universities, no Turkish university is among the region’s top 100. Middle East Technical University takes the country’s highest rank, placing 124th thanks to a strong Employer Reputation and Outbound Exchange.

Latin America & Caribbean’s top universities revealed

QS Quacquarelli Symonds, global higher education analyst, has released the thirteenth annual list of Latin America & The Caribbean’s best universities. Evaluating the continent’s institutions based on academic and employer recognition, research output, resources and internationalisation, the final table lists 430 institutions across 25 locations.

Universidade de São Paulo takes the top spot, usurping Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile which comes second while Brazil’s Universidade Estadual de Campinas places third. Brazil is the most represented higher education system, with 97 listed universities, followed by Mexico with 63 and Colombia with 61.

Overview

• Argentina: 14/43 universities drop, 12 rise, 17 remain static. Universidad de Buenos Aires (9^th) is national leader
• Bolivia’s Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (135^th) ranks seventh for Citations per Paper
• Brazil leads in PhD-trained faculty and research volume
• Chile is most well-renowned country among international academics
• Colombia boasts the most top-50 universities for Employer Reputation

East progresses at a slower pace, West declines at a faster rate

 QS Quacquarelli Symonds, global higher education analysts, released the nineteenth edition of the QS World University Rankings, featuring 1418 institutions across 100 locations. The results account for 16.4 million academic papers and 117.8 million citations received by those papers; they also reflect the expert opinions of 151,000 academic faculty and 99,000 employers. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) celebrates eleven years as the world’s best university. Among the top five, The University of Oxford (4^th) drops two places while The University of Cambridge (2^nd) gains one.

Highlights

• • USA: 103/201 ranked universities fall while only 29 rise. Twenty-five are new entrants.

• • UK: 48/90 universities decline and only ten improve.

• • Canada: 20/31 universities drop. McGill University (31^st) is the new national leader.

• • Australia retains five top-50 universities, but is stagnating, with as many universities improving as declining.

• • China (Mainland) is home to two of the world’s top 15 universities for the first time ever. It’s the third most-represented higher education system, with 71 universities.

• • India: more improvements than falls; All top nine institutions rise.

World’s Best Full-time Global MBAs: Highlights & Trends

• • Europe’s top-spot is maintained by HEC Paris in fourth globally. It achieves the world’s joint highest score for Return on Investment, alongside its domestic competitor ESCP Europe, and is among the world’s top-10 for Employability and Thought Leadership.

• • In the United Kingdom, London Business School takes the highest rank, climbing to 5^th place globally thanks to the world’s best Employability score, fourth highest Alumni Outcomes score and one of the world’s ten highest scores for Thought Leadership.

• • Canada’s top full-time MBA is provided by Toronto (Rotman), placing 41^st globally. It achieves the country’s highest score for Employability, Though Leadership, and Diversity.

• • The best MBA in Asia is provided by the National University of Singapore (26^th), driven by its performance in the Employability indicator, as it achieves the region’s highest rate.
    Only INSEAD, with its multi-campus presence also in Singapore, ranks higher (9^th).

• • EGADE Business School in Mexico is named the best full-time MBA provider in Latin America. It places 54^th globally, down three positions from last year. It enjoys excellent performances in QS’ Employability and Alumni Outcomes indicators, in which it places 35^th and 20^th globally.

• • AUB (Suliman S. Olayan) in Lebanon is the best full-time MBA provider in the Arab region. It ranks 79^th globally, the same as last year. This rank is underpinned by a truly world-class Return on Investment for its students.

Arab Region’s top universities revealed

QS Quacquarelli Symonds, global higher education analyst and compiler of the QS World University Rankings, has released the ninth annual list of the Arab Region’s best universities. Evaluating the region’s institutions based on academic and employer recognition, research, resources and internationalisation, this year’s Arab Region ranking is the largest ever, featuring 199 universities across 18 countries.

For the fourth consecutive year, Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz University (KAU) takes the regional top spot, followed by Qatar University in 2^nd and King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals in Saudi Arabia coming 3^rd.

Of the Arab Region’s total ranked universities, 24 improve, 70 remain stable and 84 decline. Twenty-one rank for the first time.

QS University Rankings 2023: Arab Region Highlights & Trends

• • Egypt is the most represented country in the Arab Region, with 33 listed universities, followed by Saudi Arabia with 31 and Iraq with 28. The American University in Cairo is the highest-ranked African university in 11^th.

• • Of the locations with more than ten ranked institutions, UAE is home to the highest proportion of top-class universities, with 71% placing in the regional top-50 and 21% among the region’s top-10.

• • King Saud University in Saudi Arabia climbs into the region’s top-5. In doing so, it usurps the United Arab Emirates University which falls from 5^th to 6^th. This improvement also gives Saudi Arabia three of the Arab Region’s top-5 universities.

• • Saudi institutions command an outstanding reputation among international Employers and Academics. KAU is the Arab Region’s most well-regarded institution according to both these metrics while King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals is among the region’s top-5. KAU also produces the Arab Region’s most impactful research, according to Citations per Paper.

• • The Islamic University of Lebanon enjoys the region’s joint highest teaching capacity. Despite this, it is Lebanon’s eighth-best university according to QS’ data, with the American University of Beirut taking the national top-spot (5^th).

• • Iraq displays a strength in teaching capacity, with two institutions ranking in the regional top-5 for Faculty per Student Ratio, including joint-leader Al Furat Al Awsat Technical University and domestic competitor Al Nahrain University.

• • There are no new additions to the Arab Region’s top-10 this year. However, Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain’s Applied Science University both break into the top-20. This is Bahrain’s only university to place in this bracket.

• • Of this year’s newly ranked universities, Tunisia’s Université de Sfax is the highest ranked, placing in the 51-60 band. The only other new entrant to place in the top-100 is the Université International de Rabat in Morocco.

• • Ten Arab Region universities achieve scores of 100/100 for their number of staff with a PhD, signifying a regional strength in terms of faculty expertise. However, five of these are Moroccan, highlighting the country as the regional leader in this competitive indicator.

• • The UAE is home to both the Arab Region’s most prolific research institutions, with the British University in Dubai and Khalifa University of Science and Technology both scoring perfect 100s for Citations per Faculty. This output is supported by exceptional numbers of staff with a PhD.

• • A whopping 16 institutions score perfect 100s for International Faculty Ratio while 13 score 100s for International Student Ratio, highlighting the Arab Region’s exceptional internationalisation. The UAE dominates these metrics.

• • Oman and Jordan have one top-10 university each, with Sultan Qaboos University in 8^th and the University of Jordan in 10^th. The University of Jordan achieves top-10 scores for Academic and Employer Reputation while Sultan Qaboos University is among the region’s top-5 for International Research.

Asia’s top universities revealed

London, 8^th November 2022: QS Quacquarelli Symonds, global higher education analyst and compiler of the QS World University Rankings, has released the fifteenth annual list of Asia’s best universities. Evaluating the region’s institutions based on academic and employer recognition, research, resources and internationalisation, this year’s Asia Rankings is the largest ever, featuring 760 universities. Eligibility is now entirely based on the United Nations’ M49 Standard. This resulted in the addition of five Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan) and Iran.

For the first time ever, Peking University claims Asia’s top spot, interrupting the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) four-year run as the region’s best university. It falls to 2^nd place while Tsinghua University comes 3^rd, breaking back into the regional top-3 after falling to 5^th in last year’s rankings.

China is the region’s most represented location, with 128 listed institutions, followed by India with 118 and Japan with 106. Of Asia’s total ranked universities, 14% improve, 15% remain stable and 61% decline. Ten percent rank for the first time.

QS University Rankings 2023: Asia Highlights & Trends

• • The highest newly-ranked university is Kazakhstan’s Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in 44^th. However, five new entrants rank among the region’s top-100: Sharif University of Technology (Iran, 84^th), University of Tehran (Iran, 92^nd), L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (Kazakhstan, 96^th) and Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (South Korea, 98^th).

• • Two Chinese universities are among Asia’s top-3, marking China’s best-ever performance in QS’ Asia Rankings and reflecting not only the ascension of Chinese universities but also the faltering of its regional competitors.

• • Two Singaporean universities are among the region’s top-5, with Nanyang University placing 5^th, down from 3^rd last year. This is the first time in eight years that a Singaporean university has not topped the table or that two of the top-3 positions have not been occupied by Singaporean institutions.

• • Of locations with more than ten ranked institutions, South Korea enjoys the highest concentration of top-20 universities, with 6% in this band. Its premier university, KAIST, breaks into the regional top-10, climbing six positions to place 8^th – its best result in five years.  This improvement is underpinned by improvements in five of QS’ metrics, most significantly in international research.

• • Japan is home to Asia’s most renowned universities among Academics and Employers alike, with The University of Tokyo achieving the region’s highest score in both these metrics. Kyoto University, meanwhile, achieves the region’s second-highest score for Employer Reputation and fifth-highest for Academic Reputation. Only China has as many universities in the top-5 for QS’ reputational indicators.

• • Pakistan’s Aga Khan University enjoys Asia’s highest teaching capacity according to Faculty/Student Ratio. However, the National University of Sciences and Technology (Islamabad) is Pakistan’s highest-ranked university in 67^th regionally.

• • With three universities among Asia’s top-5 for their number of Staff with a PhD, Iran boasts some of the region’s most highly trained faculty. Its top-ranked university, Sharif University of Technology (84^th), boasts Asia’s second-highest number of Staff with a PhD.

• • India is Asia’s most prolific producer of research according to Papers per Faculty. Three of its universities are among the region’s top-5 for this metric, including the Indian Institute of Science which produces the region’s second-highest amount of research, behind China’s University of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

• • The University of Chinese Academy of Sciences’ pre-eminence for research output is underpinned by an exceptional level of cross-border collaborative research, scoring a perfect 100/100 for International Research Network.

• • Singapore and Hong Kong SAR both produce an outstanding level of important research, according to QS’ measure of scholarly impact, Citations per Paper, with two institutions each placing among the region’s top-5. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is the highest-ranked university in this metric, indicating outstanding quality research.

• • Somewhat unsurprisingly, the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau are home to Asia’s most international faculty. Macau University of Science and Technology boasts the highest score for International Faculty Ratio.

• • A similar trend is seen for International Student Ratio, with Macau University of Science and Technology again taking the top spot. However, in this indicator, Malaysia also asserts itself as a regional leader, boasting two universities in the top-5 and four in the top-10 – more than any other location.

• • Vietnam is the most improved Asian location, with 55% of its institutions moving up the rankings, followed by Malaysia with 34% and Indonesia with 28%.

• • Of Asian locations with more than ten ranked universities, Malaysia has the highest concentration of top-class universities, with 22% of its institutions among Asia’s top-100 and 17% among the top-50.

World’s leading master’s programmes for international trade revealed

QS Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), global higher education analyst, has released today the 2023 edition of the International Trade Rankings, in partnership with the Hinrich Foundation.

The Rankings provide insights for aspiring professionals, employers, universities and business schools into the world’s best international trade master’s programmes. The first edition assesses 200 courses in 43 countries and territories based on their performance across seven key lenses, including course content, graduate outcomes, industry networks, teaching methods and research.

The Master in Global Management at Arizona State University’s Thunderbird School of Global Management is crowned the world’s best international trade programme, while the Master of International Trade at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand and Singapore’s Professional MBA (International Trading) at Nanyang Business School take second and third place respectively.

QS International Trade Rankings 2023: Regional Focus

United States & Canada Focus

With 48 ranked international trade courses, the US is the most represented country in this year’s Rankings and boasts five of the world’s ten best programmes. Canada sees eight courses ranked, with four in the top 100.

• • Arizona State University’s Thunderbird School of Global Management comes first globally, with its Master of Global Management enjoying some of the world’s most experienced faculty and best industry partnerships. It also boasts outstanding course content and delivery, underpinned by an exceptional level of graduate support.

• • Carlson School of Management’s MBA at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities is the world’s fourth-best programme for international trade. This course delivers outstanding internship opportunities and is also among the world’s best for its flexible course delivery options.

• • Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University in Canada also performs excellently, with its MBA ranking 24^th in the world. Its course delivery options, whether hybrid, online or in-person, are particularly strong. Meanwhile, HEC Montréal’s MSc International Business is the only other Canadian course to place among the world’s top 50 due to outstanding course content.

Europe Focus

QS ranks 55 Continental European international trade programmes in 17 countries. Twenty-two of these are among the world’s top 100.

• • France’s KEDGE Business School places tenth for its MSc International Business, Europe’s highest-ranked international trade programme. This success is underpinned by an outstanding level of industry experience among its faculty and excellent internship opportunities.

• • Spain’s ESIC Business & Marketing School is the only other Continental European institution to rank in the world’s top 20, with its Master in International Trade & Business placing 13^th. It boasts exceptional graduate support, excellent industry partnerships and an emphasis on experiential learning.

• • In Switzerland, the International University in Geneva’s Master of International Trade and Finance places 29^th. It is among the world’s best programmes for faculty expertise, industry partnerships and course content.

Asia Focus

Asia is home to 43 ranked international trade programmes across 13 locations, including 11 programmes in the top 100.

• • Nanyang Business School’s Professional MBA (International Trading) programme at Nanyang Technological University comes third in the world, boasting outstanding course content across major areas of cross-border trade, including policy, logistics, supply chain management and finance. It is also one of the world’s best programmes for flexible course delivery options.

• • The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Business School’s Executive MBA comes 18^th globally. It enjoys strong graduate outcomes thanks in part to a high degree of student career support both before and after graduation. It also produces some of Asia’s highest-quality research, according to citations per paper.

• • China’s highest-ranked business course for international trade belongs to Antai College of Economics & Management at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Its Executive MBA ranks 53^rd, enjoying strong partnerships with employers and a high graduate employment rate.

• • GITAM University’s MBA International Business is India’s highest-ranked course, placing 62^nd. This course enjoys outstanding industry partnerships alongside a high number of faculty with industry experience which support exceptional internship opportunities. It is also among the world’s most sustainable courses, according to ESG data.

United Kingdom Focus

The UK is the second most represented country in the Rankings, with 25 featured programmes. Of these, 17 place in the world’s top 100.

• • Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge’s Global Executive MBA takes fifth place globally. This programme enjoys an exceptional reputation among global academics and employers which is bolstered by strong industry networks and employer partnerships. Again, its course content is among the best in the world and boasts outstanding flexibility in terms of course delivery.

• • Bayes Business School’s MSc International Business at City, University of London is the only other UK International Trade programme to rank in the top 10, placing 7^th globally. It excels in providing quality learning experiences and boasts outstanding industry partnerships.

New Zealand / Australia Focus

Australia is home to nine ranked international trade programmes, while New Zealand is home to two. Of these, nine are among the world’s top 100.

• • The Master of International Trade offered by Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand is the world’s second highest-ranked international trade programme. It is home to some of the world’s best industry partnerships and faculty with industry experience, enhancing graduate outcomes and networking opportunities. It also offers outstanding experiential learning opportunities and high-quality course content

• • In Australia, The University of Melbourne takes the highest rank, in 27^th. Its Executive MBA enjoys a strong international reputation, boasts high-quality content in relevant trade disciplines and strong partnerships with employers alongside flexible course delivery options.

Latin America Focus

Latin America is home to seven ranked courses. Brazil and Peru both have two while Chile, Ecuador and Mexico each have one.

• • The only Latin American programme in the world’s top 100 is Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú’s Executive MBA at CENTRUM Graduate Business School. It enjoys strong industrial partnerships, faculty expertise and efficient, flexible course delivery options.

• • Latin America’s second-highest ranked graduate trade programme belongs to Brazil’s Fundação Getulio Vargas’ MBA programme which has high-quality course content and graduate support.

Announced: world’s leading universities for achieving sustainability impact

London, 26^th October 2022: QS Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), global higher education analysts, released today the inaugural QS World University Rankings: Sustainability, a new framework to evaluate how universities are taking action to tackle the world’s most pressing environmental and social issues.

In developing the concept for, and methodology of the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability, QS launched an extensive consultation involving its 50-person Academic Advisory Board², representatives of hundreds of universities worldwide, thousands of students, and data partners at Scopus/Elsevier³ and Yale University.

QS evaluated over 1300 higher education institutions meeting specific eligibility requirements¹. Of those, 700 appear in this ranking. The University of California, Berkeley is named the global leader, achieving top scores in both the Environmental Impact and Social Impact categories, each contributing 50% of the overall score. It is followed by two Canadian institutions, the University of Toronto (2^nd ) and the University of British Columbia (3^rd ).

The United States dominates the rankings, with 135 ranked universities (19.2% of the total), including thirty among the top 100, while the United Kingdom is the second-most represented country, with 67 universities ranked (9.5%), including twenty among the top 100. Germany is the third-best for overall representation, with 39 universities.

QS World University Rankings: Sustainability: Regional Overview

• • South Africa dominates the table among African countries. Its premier institution, the University of Cape Town, achieves’ Africa’s highest scores in 4/8 of QS’ metrics.

• • The Arab Region’s highest-ranked university is the University of Beirut. It is among the world’s top-20 in QS’ Sustainable Education metric, which assesses the extent to which institutions are educating students to both understand and make a difference to the environment.

• • The only Asian institution to place among the world’s top-20 is The University of Tokyo, which records world-class results for Sustainable Education and Sustainable Institutions. The latter indicator analyses institutional strategy and operations directed towards an environmentally sustainable future.

• • Three of the world’s top-10 universities are located in Australasia, including two Australian universities, The University of New South Wales and The University of Sydney, which are tied in fifth place globally.

• • The Nordic countries assert themselves as world-leaders in this ranking, with Continental Europe’s top three positions occupied by Nordic universities. This success is underpinned by some of the world’s finest Sustainability Research. Sweden enjoys the world’s highest concentration of top-class universities among locations with five or more institutions.

• • In the UK, the ancient universities of Scotland shine with The University of Edinburgh (4^th) and The University of Glasgow (13^th) outranking Oxbridge, the University of Aberdeen (64^th) featuring in the top 10% of the table and The University of St Andrews (143^rd) placing among the top 150.

• • Latin America’s premier universities enjoy strong scores for Sustainable Education. In particular, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México is among the world’s five best institutions for this metric.

The UN’s most recent Sustainable Development Report showed that the world’s progress towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has slowed for the second consecutive year. ⁷ However, the global higher education sector can play a meaningful role in reversing this post-pandemic slowdown.

Latin America’s top universities for 2023 revealed

QS Quacquarelli Symonds, global higher education analyst, has released the twelfth annual list of Latin America’s best universities. Evaluating the continent’s institutions based on academic and employer recognition, research output, resources and internationalisation, the final table lists 428 institutions across 20 locations, up from 418 last year.

For the fifth consecutive year, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile is crowned Latin America’s top university. Universidade de São Paulo takes 2^nd place, while Universidad de Chile comes 3^rd. Brazil is the continent’s most represented higher education system, with 98 listed universities, followed by Mexico with 64 and Colombia with 62.

QS Quacquarelli Symonds – the international higher education think-tank – released the twelfth edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject: an independent comparative analysis of the performance of 15,200 individual university programs taken by students at 1543 universities in 88 locations across the world, across 51 academic disciplines.

Global Highlights

• • US institutions lead in 28 of the 51 subjects ranked. Harvard University and MIT remain the strongest-performing institutions, ranking number one in twelve subjects.

• • Fifteen subject tables are topped by a British university, with the University of Oxford leading in six.

• • ETH Zurich is continental Europe’s top university, achieving number-one spots in three subjects. Moreover, based on its share of top-10 ranks, Switzerland is the world’s third-best higher education sector.

• • Australia is the fourth most represented country for the number of entries

• • China (Mainland) ranks fifth globally for the number of programs (100), achieving a top-50 rank.

Nearly 90% have become less affordable, QS finds

London, 29^th June 2022: QS Quacquarelli Symonds, global higher education analysts, published today the 10^th edition of the QS Best Student Cities rankings, which enable students to compare 140 premier educational destinations, including 30 new entries. London retains its status as the world’s best student city for the fourth consecutive edition. Munich (2^nd =) shares its silver medal with Seoul (2^nd =). Zurich (4^th) and Melbourne (5^th) break into the top-5 while Edinburgh (10^th) joins the top-10.

QS ranks cities with a population of at least 250,000, and with at least two universities placing in the QS World University Rankings. The ranking offers a powerful lens into the sentiments of both prospective and former students, with over 98,000 survey responses contributing to the Desirability (prospective students) and Student View (former students) indexes.

London’s leadership is due to:

• • Its high concentration of world-class universities; it achieves the world’s second-best score in the Rankings indicator.

• • Highly positive feedback from students that have studied in the city: it scores 98.5/100 for Student View, a result bettered only by Berlin.

• • Outstanding career opportunities for graduates: it places 4^th in the Employer Activity metric, scoring 92.7/100.

• • Its high levels of openness to international students, which see it achieve the world’s fifth-best score (94.9/100) for Student Mix.

Worryingly, cities are broadly becoming less affordable for students by QS’ measures, with just under 90% declining in our Affordability metric.”

• • UK, Germany, and Australia are each home to two of the world’s ten best student cities.

• • Five of Australia’s seven ranked cities rise.

• • Paris rises to the eighth place. Barcelona (31^st) is Spain’s top-city.

• • Canada boasts three top-20 student cities, while US, Japan and Switzerland have two each.

• • The US highest-ranking cities are Boston (11^th) and NYC (18^th).

• • All the 18 US ranked cities decline in the Affordability indicator.

• • Los Angeles and Kuala Lumpur break into the top-30.

• • Seoul (2^nd) is Asia’s top-ranked city.

• • China (Mainland) top entry is Beijing (29^th)

• • India doubles its representation. Mumbai (103^rd) is the highest ranked.

• • Latin America’s number-one student destination is Buenos Aires (23^rd)

• • Sao Paulo (86^th) and new-entry Rio de Janeiro (121^st) are Brazil’s ranked cities.

• • Africa’s top city for students is Cape Town (78^th).

• • Dubai (51^st) is the top-ranked city in the Middle East.

• • The fastest rising cities are Almaty 75^th, rising thirty 30 places, followed by Abu Dhabi (71^st) and Ankara (77^th) both rising twenty-one places.

Methodology

The six metric groups that QS use to compile the Best Student Cities ranking are:

• • Rankings: does this city have a range of highly ranked universities?

• • Desirability: is this city a desirable place to live, and do prospective students consistently express a preference for studying here?

• • Affordability: is this city affordable for students? This indicator group accounts for a range of cost-of-living metrics, including average tuition fees, the iPad Index, and the Big Mac Index.

• • Employer Activity: do employers regard the city’s universities highly, and are there economic opportunities for graduates? This indicator group makes use of over 99,000 responses to the QS Employer Survey, while also factoring in the levels of youth employment in a city.

• • Student Mix: is this city a diverse and tolerant place in which to live? Does it have a large student population?

• • Student Voice: do students who have actually studied in this city recommend it to their peers? This indicator group acknowledges the importance of independent peer review in the provision of high-quality recommendations. This edition is informed by the views of 98,426 survey respondents.
